Wyclef Jean Returns to Roots in ‘Back From Abu Dhabi’ with Tasha Smith’s Visionary Direction

Wyclef Jean’s name echoes through the halls of hip-hop and global music culture alike. Known for his relentless creativity and ability to merge diverse sounds into compelling music, the artist once again returns to the limelight with his latest single, “Back From Abu Dhabi.” The track and its visually stunning music video serve as a testament to his career-long ability to fuse the personal with the universal.

Recently, Wyclef Jean has channeled his energy into the highly anticipated music video for “Back From Abu Dhabi,” and in doing so, he has potentially set the stage for a revitalization of his career in the modern music landscape. The video elegantly showcases the complexity of Wyclef’s artistry, juxtaposing the high-end charm of Abu Dhabi with the gritty, heartfelt streets of Newark, New Jersey.

Reflecting on his history, the release follows a series of transformative phases in Wyclef’s career. From his groundbreaking era with the Fugees, through his successful ventures into solo territory with hits like “Gone Till November,” to his collaborative efforts on tracks like “Hips Don’t Lie” with Shakira, Wyclef has repeatedly proven his ability to stay relevant. Each milestone in his career has been marked by an evolution in sound and creativity, and “Back From Abu Dhabi” is no different.

The visuals for “Back From Abu Dhabi” feature an impressive array of appearances, including the comedic flavor of Dave Chappelle and the lyrical prowess of French Montana and Rick Ross. Filmed in New Jersey, the video is directed by Tasha Smith, an accomplished actress and director best known for her work in films like “Daddy’s Little Girls” and TV shows such as “P-Valley” and “BMF.”

“The inspiration for this video for me is my next project, [which] is called Quantum Leap: Past, Present, Future,” Wyclef said in a statement to VIBE. “I’m a big fan of sci-fi movies and I was just trying the idea of you can be bigger than life. I miss those kinds of music videos, and I wanted it to feel vintage, like something that had a 90s feel, but with the futuristic 2026 feel.”

Tasha Smith, who was personally recruited by Wyclef to direct the music video, argues that collaboration and trust were integral to bringing the project to fruition. “Working with Wyclef Jean has been a blessing,” Smith stated, capturing the profound professional rapport and shared vision between the two artists.

The trend of artists harking back to their beginnings, re-exploring the landscapes that shaped them, is nothing new. Nas did it with “King’s Disease,” and even Jay-Z has consistently referenced his Marcy Projects origins. Wyclef’s return isn’t just nostalgic; it is a bold homage to his roots and a clear road sign for where his music is heading next.

With the release of his forthcoming album, Quantum Leap: Past, Present, Future, Wyclef is keen to blend nostalgia with innovation. This year also marks the 30th anniversary of the Fugees’ legendary album, The Score, and the 20th anniversary of “Hips Don’t Lie,” both of which continue to have a significant cultural impact.

The synchronicity of these anniversaries with his new releases not only underscores Wyclef’s enduring influence but also highlights his commitment to pushing the envelope in music production and storytelling. “Back From Abu Dhabi” is an earnest invitation by Wyclef Jean for his audience to embark with him on yet another artistic journey, affirming his status as a pivotal figure in music both past and present.
