It’s hard to believe, but Joey is only 22 years old. Not long ago, he burst into the industry with the mixtape “1999”, where he showcased his skills over classic hip-hop instrumentals. It was for his loyalty to these traditions that Joey Bada$$ was already a local star at 17, approaching worldwide recognition. Even as a teenager, he showed a great passion for poetry and golden-age hip-hop, risking being trapped in his image. But things went a little differently.
The rapper’s debut album, “B4.DA.$$”, showed growth and the artist’s desire to change. Nevertheless, there was still a sense that Joey couldn’t find a niche where he felt comfortable. “B4.DA.$$” was good as a mixtape/street album, but it was hard to perceive it as a groundbreaking debut. Bada$$ did reconsider his outlook on music, improved his lyrical skills, and decided to present himself as a completely mature artist.
Undoubtedly, “All-Amerikkkan Bada$$” is a step towards a new stage in the young artist’s life. This 12-track release much better reveals the author’s potential, holding attention on each composition. Joey Bada$$ is no longer just a kid inspired by 90s New York rap. He is a truly self-sufficient artist ready to use his music for dialogue with the listener and exploration of the world around him.
